postheadericon Nikki Leigh Interviews Dr Debi Yohn, Author of Losing Your Only

Recently I had a chance to read Losing Your Only by Dr Debi Yohn – which I will review soon. As part of the campaign we’re coordinating for her, I also had a chance to interview her. I’d like to share that interview with you – let’s start with a few words from Dr Debi about how personal this book is for her.

A Comment From Dr Debi About Losing Your Only

My current book, Losing Your Only is written to the Parents or Loved Ones that have lost an only child.  This book is written from my own personal experience.  When my only child was killed in a car accident, my life took a different path.  I was living in Shanghai China.  He was going to college in USA.  In my grief, I discovered that my purpose is to motivate, and support parents and all clients live to their life potential. Losing a child is horrific, losing an only child brings it up a notch.  So what do we do with that kind of experience?  We have decisions to make.  We can live or we can die with the child.  I decided not only to live, but to thrive.

Nikki Leigh – Let’s start by tell people where you are from and where are you now?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I was born and raised in Miami, Florida.  I live between Shanghai China and Huatulco, Mexico with my US home base in Palm Beach, Florida.

Nikki Leigh – What do you do when you are not writing?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I have an elite private practice as a psychologist in Shanghai, China.  I see clients face to face in Shanghai or I am flown to where they are for intense counseling.  Its all very cool.

Nikki Leigh – Writing is not you primary occupation, so how did you get started writing?

Dr. Debi Yohn – In college, there was lots of writing, but my dissertation was my first published work.  After Levi passed, I wrote the books for College Students and Parenting College Students.  I still had a lot to say so I used writing to pass on all that I learned from parenting Levi and from my work as a counseling psychologist.

Nikki Leigh – What is something about your life and work that readers would like to know about you?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I am traditionally trained but I practice outside the box.  I have a spiritual focus for everything I do.  I have a zany sense of humor and try to see the positives of life.  When challenged, I try to figure it out. When blocked, I try to figure out why the road is blocked in front of me.  I love to travel and see things I have not seen before and I hate to be cold.

Nikki Leigh – What inspired your first book?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I missed parenting.  When Levi passed, I realized that this was part of what I missed, that I could still do.  So I wrote the books and started speaking.  I still parent, but not my own.

Nikki Leigh – What are the titles of your books and what genres are they?

Dr. Debi Yohn -

Parenting College Students: 27 Winning Strategies for Success

College Students: 29 Winning Strategies for Success

Relationships in College: 26 Winning Strategies for Success

Leadership in College: 25 Winning Strategies for Success

Losing Your Only

Nikki Leigh – I like to establish author credibility, so why are you specially qualified to write about this topic?

Dr. Debi Yohn -

I lost my only child.  He was 20 years old.  I lost my marriage after 35 years.

I am a Counseling Psychologist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Nikki Leigh – How do you manage to keep yourself focused and on track when you’re writing a book?

Dr. Debi Yohn – The first write is the easiest.  I hand wrote it, then spoke it into the computer (Dragon Speak), then I edited it from that version.  I also had several editors along the way that kept me out of the weeds.  I did not want the book to be just about memories.  We have other memories from parents that have lost children.  I wanted this book to be a book that would specifically help parents that have lost an only child through the grief process.

Nikki Leigh – Do you write to make money, for the love of writing or both?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I write books to compliment my practice and to teach.  The money issue is not even a consideration.  All my profit from writing goes to Charity.

Nikki Leigh – What are some unique methods of marketing you have used? Which were the most successful?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I don’t do anything unique but I try to do it all: web site, blogging, writing articles, speaking, being on panels and doing radio.

Nikki Leigh – Do you sell through a website? If so, what’s the address? If not, why not?

Dr. Debi Yohn -

LosingYourOnly.comhttp://losingyouronly.com

TheInternationalPsychologist.comhttp://theinternationalpsychologist.com/

CollegeWorks101.comhttp://collegeworks101.com/

Nikki Leigh – Where can people order your books?

Dr. Debi Yohn – Amazon and my web sites. Right now

Nikki Leigh – What format are your books – e-book, print, audio etc?

Dr. Debi Yohn – All the above but I am working on the audio book.  I also plan to have Losing Your Only translated into Chinese since it is a country of Only children due to the One Child Rule.

Nikki Leigh – Will you write more books?

Dr. Debi Yohn – At this point, I am going to take a break from book writing and promote the ones I have.  However, in the future, I may get passionate about something else and write another book.

Nikki Leigh – What do you have in the works now?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I am working on my website TheInternationalPyschologist and writing articles as the Original BareFoot consultant, teaching others how to live and thrive abroad.

Nikki Leigh – What does the future hold for you and your books?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I cannot say for the future…  I really just live for today.  I am hopeful that Losing Your Only will open some opportunities for something amazing, I just don’t know what that is yet!

Nikki Leigh – What was the most successful thing you did to promote your books?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I connected with Nikki Leigh.  She knows what she is doing with book promotion and is a wonderful support to people like me that like to write the book and then we don’t know how to promote it so others even know it is there!

Nikki Leigh – What makes this book special to you?

Dr. Debi Yohn – Levi is still very present in my life and he taught me some amazing lessons.  I am able to share these lessons, hard learned lessons with others.

Nikki Leigh – What makes this a book that other people MUST read and WHY?

Dr. Debi Yohn – This books helps both parents and other family members and friends to better understand the grief process which is deep and debilitating. I want others to learn from my mistakes. I am a psychologist but I did not understand the process until I went through it personally.

Nikki Leigh – What people NEED to read this book and WHY?

Dr. Debi Yohn – Anyone that has lost a child, especially an only child, no matter what age, should read this book.  Anyone that has a loved one that has lost a child would also benefit from this book.  Counselors, clergy or caretakers should give it a read…

Nikki Leigh – What sparks your creativity? Any tips to help others spark their own
creativity?

Dr. Debi Yohn – Telling stories sparks my creativity especially telling Levi stories.  It is sharing, like sitting around a camp fire.

Nikki Leigh – What do you think motivates people to become authors? What motivated you to get into this unusual industry?

Dr. Debi Yohn – People want to tell their story.  I think we are story tellers.

Nikki Leigh – Tell me about the most unusual things you have done to promote any books?

Dr. Debi Yohn – I attended an event where it was like speed dating in NYC but each person had 2 minutes in front of producers from various media.  I learned to be concise and flexible, according to the needs of the producer.

Nikki Leigh – If a potential reader thinks that your book wouldn’t interest them, what would you say to convince them to buy? I’m thinking something better than “Its the greatest book ever.” Give me something more specific :)

Dr. Debi Yohn – Death is part of life.  Losing Your Only give everyone an insight they currently do not have when they walk down the path of parents that have lost a child.

Nikki Leigh – Why does the topic of your book interest you? Why would it interest potential readers? Give us a hook to reel in new readers.

Dr. Debi Yohn – When a child passes, often, due to the pain, the child is not talked about.  They are almost forgotten in the living world.  I want others to celebrate the time they had with their child and when they remember their child, they are able to smile.

Nikki Leigh – Thank you for joining us today Dr Debi and for sharing this very personal journey – in an effort to help others deal with the loss of a child and the loss of loved ones. For more information about Losing Your Only, visit http://losingyouronly.com/get-the-book/

postheadericon “The Tempestini” As a Promotional Tool for Cafe Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island by Barbara Bonfigli

Imagine – using a cocktail as a promotional tool.  Read on for details about the ingredients for this cocktail and how it has worked into the promotion of Cafe Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island by Barbara Bonfigli

Retsina has been given a bad rap, starting about 500 b.c. when some picky Athenians turned up their Grecian noses at the scent and taste of pine resin. Being a readily available natural resource — pine forests were a lot more common in Greece than cork groves — it was used to seal traveling amphorae of white wine. These plugs of pine added a certain flavor to the wine — turpentine comes to mind here. Heroditus records no complaints back then. For a while it was even trendy to add a little pine mash to the freshly pressed grapes. But when the Turks began overrunning parts of Greece a few hundred years later, a legend grew that pine sap was added to the wine stores to spoil them for the invaders. That sealed retsina’s fate in the area of public relations — ’til now.

When I started going to Greece in the 80′s, the Turkish invasion theory had waned, and I was told that a bit of resin in your wine prevents a hangover in the hot, ubiquitous Greek sun; be sure to pack a bottle for your beach picnic. I wasn’t buying that, but I am buying retsina. The fact that I, a Californian born within sipping distance of the vineyards of Napa Valley, really like retsina, indicates that the ancients were on to something. Either that or it’s clear proof of reincarnation. That, however, is a another story…maybe the sequel to “Café Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island.”

Publishing a book requires a thorough review. I discovered that my novel mentions retsina 34 times, not in a loving way. According to my protagonist Sarah, retsina can start your motorbike, remove nail polish, cure you of thought, and cause –what is it?– oh yes, memory loss. Unfair Sarah! I decided to correct this slander. For my first book party, held in a fancy Greek restaurant in New York City, I decided to create a cocktail based on retsina. A friend and I experimented with lots of ingredients (this is pure fun, by the way, as long as you’re not planning to drive anywhere.) We couldn’t get it quite right. Then the bartender at the restaurant added a little Samos, a sweet Greek dessert wine to our concoction. Bingo! The “Café Tempestini” was born.

We served it that first night, to a lot of discerning i.e. highly skeptical — but brave– Greeks and they were amazed. The main ingredient is rather disguised of course, but you can still taste retsina in there. Now I mix a batch at every bookstore event, book party, dinner party. People adore it; and how it opens their ears and imaginations and wallets! Books are flying out the door.

postheadericon Blogging Tips

Here are some tips for bloggers.

• Keep your posts “on topic”. This will enable you to promote your product and website when you keep your posts and blog on topic.
• Make your posts informative and interesting. This isn’t just busy work to entertain your visitors. You can share information to help them make an educated decision to buy your product.
• Do not recycle old information. Your readers want you to share new information. The exception would be to relate a past event to a present situation.
• Have a realistic and consistent schedule. After you start your blog, post fresh content on a regular basis. Your potential customers will expect that and will lose interest if you lag behind with your posts.
• Make the important message easy to understand. The posts don’t need to be elaborate and technical. Be conversational and easy to understand tone.
• Maintain a certain level of quality. You need to use keywords in your posts but don’t lose the effective content because you tried to cram too many keywords into your post. Search engines love blogs and can increase references to you and your product. Maintain the quality and weave keywords into your posts.
• Proofread your work. The old adage is to: edit, edit, edit and edit again. If you want to look like a professional and your post is full of errors and typos, the visitor will not be motivated to buy from you. Or they won’t see you as a professional. This can hurt your credibility.
• Be passionate about your topic. If you are excited about your subject, that should be conveyed to your visitors. Pass that excitement to your potential customers and they should rush to buy your products.
• Determine your target market. It is critical that you know who needs your product. These are the people that you need to attract with all of your promotional efforts.
• Finally, link to other blogs. When you post comments on other blogs, include your blog URL under your name. Don’t post an elaborate message or blurb about your blog. All you need is to post a relevant comment that will attract attention and list your name and blog address. Subtle is much better than blatant and potentially rude promotions.

postheadericon Unique Book Promotion – Weddings Are Dangerous to Marriage

We have our first “Unique Way to Promote Your Book” and I’m on the lookout for more……

Since wedding books always sound so “rosettes and champagne,” we created a shocking press pitch that we sent to radio and television producers and it worked every time. The interview questions included many of the same points so it was easy to promote our book and our website http://smartweddingcouples.com as the answers to all these problems:

WEDDINGS ARE DANGEROUS TO MARRIAGE
Many wedding traditions don’t support the couple’s relationship or the marriage they are committing to –

In fact, the typical traditional wedding is a mine-field of disasters waiting to happen:
  • Surprise proposals before the couple even discusses kids, finances, or life goals (and what if she doesn’t like the ring?)
  • Only the bride wears an engagement ring, the groom wears nothing (she’s taken – is he?)
  • The bride and her mother plan the wedding while the groom is treated like an accessory or worse (no wonder husbands feel excluded from family life)
  • Parents pay for weddings as if the bride and groom are still children (even when the “kids” are fully employed adults)
  • Trying to impress the guests and outdo friends, the emphasis is on glitz and glam, hardly the vows (which are, after all, the point)
  • The average cost of today’s wedding is $27,000 – often not including the ring, the gown, or the honeymoon (production values win out over purpose)
  • Couples go into debt over this one-day event (is that the way to start a marriage?)
  • And on and on and on . . .

BUT . . . there’s an important new trend that’s helping turn things around.
We are husband and wife, best-selling relationship authors Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski AND as a psychology team(we both have PhDs) we wrote our book –

THE SMART COUPLE’S GUIDE TO THE WEDDING OF YOUR DREAMS:
Planning Together for Less Stress and More Joy
(New World Library)
To point out wedding dangers and provide meaningful modern-day alternatives.
Unlike any other wedding book, The Smart Couple’s Guide:

  • Is the ONLY wedding book on the market for the couple

  • Shows the couple that how they treat each during their wedding planning sets the foundation for their marriage — and most couples don’t have a clue about this.

  • Is the ONLY voice for the NEW TREND in American weddings — which is that “80% of grooms are now active co-partners in the planning of their weddings.” (TIME 10-3-05)

  • That’s revolutionary. And we predict this trend will bring down the divorce rate. Taking the couple from their engagement through their honeymoon, our book is an easy and fun read punctuated with nearly 150 heartfelt stories from brides, grooms, and couples around the country.

We’ve included our bio at the end so you can see our extensive media experience, and you can check us out at http://judithandjim.com as well as our book at http://www.smartweddingcouples.com

We’d like to send you a review copy of the book, just tell us the appropriate address.
We’ll give you a provocative and exciting segment — count on it.
We look forward to hearing from you.
The Voice for The New American Wedding,
